Julia Kowalski's folk horror Her Will Be Done is finally heading to a wider North American audience, with Yellow Veil Pictures bringing the film to VOD on October 2, 2026 - the release follows a festival run that began at Cannes in 2025 and included stops at Fantastic Fest, Sitges and other genre festivals.
Julia Kowalski's Folk Horror Finally Gets a Wider Release
Her Will Be Done, originally titled Que ma volonté soit faite, is a French-Polish production that sits somewhere between folk horror, supernatural drama and a coming-of-age story that gets increasingly strange as it goes along.
The film centers on 20-year-old Nawojka, played by Maria Wróbel, who is stuck working on her family's struggling farm while dreaming of leaving to study veterinary medicine, where her situation becomes considerably more complicated when Sandra, played by Roxane Mesquida, returns to the area and Naw begins experiencing trance-like episodes and strange abilities connected to her dead mother.
Kowalski has described the movie as a witch film, and that gives you a pretty good idea of where some of its ideas are coming from, wherethe film uses Naw's situation to get into questions around religion, female sexuality, family control and the way a rural community can react when somebody doesn't fit the rules everyone else has accepted.
That also ties into Kowalski's own background - born in France to Polish parents, the filmmaker brings both sides of that identity into the film, while the story draws on research into rural witchcraft and beliefs surrounding women who were considered dangerous or unnatural.
The movie was also shot on 16mm, by cinematographer Simon Beaufils, giving the French countryside a rougher, more documentary-like appearance rather than the polished look you often get from contemporary supernatural horror.
From Cannes to Fantastic Fest
Her Will Be Done first premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival in Directors' Fortnight, where it was nominated for the Directors' Fortnight Audience Award and the Queer Palm, and it subsequently traveled through the festival circuit, including Fantastic Fest, Sitges and the New Horizons International Film Festival.
The film also picked up a Special Mention at New Horizons and the Méliès d'argent for Best European Feature at Portugal's Motel X festival, and that festival run has taken the movie well beyond its original French release, with screenings continuing into 2026 before the North American VOD launch - Yellow Veil Pictures will release Her Will Be Done on VOD across North America on October 2, 2026.
