TL;DR - Slashercise is a silly little 80s-style slasher that looks like someone found an old aerobics tape and decided to add a masked killer.

Slashercise Plot

Slashercise follows a masked killer known as Meathead as he stalks fitness clubs around Los Angeles, turning workout sessions into blood-soaked nightmares.

A Very 80s Slasher

Slashercise really does go all in on the 80s workout video thing, I will give it that, as you've got the bright workout gear, neon everywhere, cheesy synth music and Vanessa Decker leading routines like this is some completely normal fitness tape, and then you've got Meathead wandering around looking pissed off where his head is literally a piece of meat.

The whole thing is very silly, but it isn't embarrassed about being silly either, which is good, because if you're going to make a film about a killer called Meathead murdering people in a gym, you may as well fucking go for it.

Ama Lea gets the look completely right too - the workout sections really do feel like they're supposed to be part of some dodgy VHS fitness tape, and then you've got the horror stuff dropped into it, and it kind of reminded me of the sort of ridiculous horror films that would have been sitting on a video shop shelf next to Killer Workout and Death Spa.

There are loads of horror people popping up in this too, which definitely adds to the fun - Vanessa Decker is at the center of it and she's clearly having a great time with the whole thing, while Spencer Charnas is here too, along with Felissa Rose, Diana Prince, Tiffany Shepis and Lisa Wilcox, so horror fans are going to recognize quite a few faces.

You also don't need a complicated killer here, you just need someone who looks completely fucking ridiculous standing in the corner of a gym, and Lee Valak as Meathead certainly does that, and the character design is probably one of the funniest things about the film because you can't really take him seriously, but you also know you're watching a slasher and people are going to get murdered.

The Kills, Gore and Comedy

This is where you are likely to have some fun, as there are proper practical effects and blood on show here, rather than the film relying entirely on quick cuts to hide everything, and the whole idea of people being attacked in a gym while this ridiculous fitness world is still going on around them is funny in itself.

Also, at only 58 minutes, it really doesn't have the time to mess around for an hour before somebody gets killed, so it goes pretty much straight for it, with some of the violence being as deliberately over the top as you would hope.

The comedy aspect is hit and miss though - some of the jokes are funny because they're so stupid, because Meathead himself is basically one big joke, and the contrast between the serious-looking slasher violence and the aerobics routines gives the film quite a few good moments, but the same sort of joke also get repeated a lot.

The fitness routines are funny the first few times because you're watching a horror movie that keeps turning into an aerobics tape, but after a while, though, I was getting the point, so repetition does creep in.

Final Verdict

Slashercise is stupid, but it's stupid in a way I can get behind, with enough personality that it doesn't just feel like somebody is simply making a random cheap slasher, and at 58 minutes it never becomes a massive commitment, with enough moments to make it worth it if you don't mind this kind of film.
