There are a lot of horror movies heading to Shudder, and The Cycle has caught my attention for a slightly different reason - Stephen King has apparently seen it, and he really wants horror fans to know about it.
King took to X to recommend the upcoming horror-thriller, saying that he doesn't usually hype up horror movies that aren't his own, but described The Cycle as “special” and told his followers to put it on their calendars.
A Dead Father With 36 Years of Secrets
The Cycle stars Deborah Ann Woll as Meg, a woman who gets dragged into a very strange mystery when the body of her father is discovered at the scene of a horrific crime, but the slightly awkward part is that her father has been missing for 36 years.
The official premise keeps most of the really interesting stuff hidden, with Meg attempting to uncover her father's dark past after his remains are discovered, and it appears to sit somewhere between a mystery thriller and supernatural horror from what I can gather.
The film is directed by Jordan Downey, who horror fans will probably know from The Head Hunter and the “Stork” segment of V/H/S/Beyond, and he is, co-writing the screenplay with Kevin Stewart, who also serves as cinematographer - the cast includes Jeffrey Donovan, Gretchen Corbett, Will Hochman, Jack Doolan, Dana Millican, Phillip Andre Botello, Carl W. Crudup, Jeb Berrier and Don Keith Opper alongside Woll.
Now, normally I wouldn't make too much of a celebrity endorsement when talking about an upcoming horror movie, as people involved with movies say nice things about movies all the time, and then we watch them and wonder what the hell they were talking about.
Stephen King saying that The Cycle is “special”, though, is a bit different, as King has obviously spent most of his life surrounded by horror, so when he goes out of his way to recommend something that isn't an adaptation of one of his own stories, it's naturally going to get people curious.
Downey has also previously mentioned The X-Files, True Detective and The Outsider among the influences behind The Cycle, which gives you a pretty good idea of the territory the movie is playing in - a dark mystery where the investigation gradually starts running into things that don't quite fit into the normal explanation of events.
