Synopsis
Burning begins with a young family suffering the devastating loss of their firstborn son. As the mother struggles with grief, she begins behaving strangely, wandering through the village and eventually disappearing into the surrounding forest, and things become even more unsettling when the father’s mother arrives at the family home, creating an increasingly tense relationship between the two women - before long, accusations, suspicion and strange events begin to surround the family, culminating in a devastating fire that destroys their home - but what actually happened?
Rather than giving audiences a straightforward answer, Burning presents the events through the conflicting accounts of three witnesses, where each person remembers the night differently, with every version shifting blame and introducing new details that make the previous story harder to trust - some believe a curse is responsible, while others see the tragedy as the result of grief, family resentment and buried secrets, and as the different accounts begin to overlap, the distinction between truth, superstition and collective belief starts to disappear.

About Burning
Burning comes from Kyrgyz filmmaker Radik Ashimov and uses a fractured narrative structure inspired by the storytelling tradition associated with Rashomon, where the film builds its horror around uncertainty. The same events are repeatedly viewed from different perspectives, forcing the audience to question which version, if any, can actually be trusted.
The approach also gives the film a strong connection to Kyrgyz folklore and village storytelling, where rumors and supernatural explanations can become almost as powerful as the events themselves - the film premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival, where it picked up both the Gold Audience Award and Special Jury Award, giving the international horror community an early look at Ashimov's unsettling take on psychological and supernatural horror.
Following its festival run, Burning is heading exclusively to IndiePix Unlimited.
