Japanese horror has certainly come up with some pretty strange horror ideas over the years, but Gacha: Kansekai might be one of the more immediately bizarre ones - this new Japanese horror movie takes the humble capsule toy machine - the things you normally empty your loose change into hoping for some useless little plastic toy - and turns it into the center of a supernatural nightmare.
That is about as far from a normal trip to the arcade as you can get.
When a Gacha Machine Becomes the Horror
The film's Japanese title is ガチャ-廻世界-, read as Gacha - Kai Sekai or Gacha: Kansekai, and the capsule toy machine is described as the key item at the center of the movie, but very little of the actual plot has been revealed yet.
Hayato Sone writes and directs the film, making his feature directorial debut - Sone is a member of BABEL LABEL and has already worked in horror and thriller television, including directing the 2023 horror drama Tsukisoi and episodes of Informer.
The idea apparently came from Sone's long-running interest in death and what happens after it, where in his comments about the film, he said he had been thinking about death, the afterlife and reincarnation since childhood.
He also specifically connected the screenplay to the period when the Japanese term "oya gacha" - roughly the idea that you are randomly assigned your parents in life - became popular, and Sone said he found the concept deeply uncomfortable at the time and brought those feelings into the screenplay.
Michihito Fujii Takes His First Horror Project
The film was planned by Michihito Fujii, the filmmaker behind movies including The Journalist and 18×2 Beyond Youthful Days - Fujii is also known for directing 2024's A Man, which won multiple Japanese Academy Awards, and he has now moved into horror for the first time as a planner on Gacha - Kai Sekai.
Fujii has described the project as an unusual addition to the horror genre and said there was a particular shot in the film that he felt he would never forget, and he also praised the collaboration between Sone and the cast, although the filmmakers are still keeping most of the actual story hidden.
Gacha: Kansekai will be released in Japanese cinemas in February 2027.
