James Wan Speaks Again on Saw
In another interview, James Wan has spoken a bit more about the new Saw movie they are doing.
It’s definitely not Spiral, it’s not Spiral. And I still blame Leigh for killing off Jigsaw, because it’s fucking hard to try and make any future Saw movies without Jigsaw.Leigh and I, we’re not going to give too much away, but we don’t think you can make a Saw movie without Jigsaw. That’s the bottom line. And ultimately, we want to hark back to the spirit, what Leigh and I love about the original first movie. The original first movie, which is Jigsaw’s philosophy and what makes him tick.Ultimately, he’s a scary guy in the first one, and we want to go back to making a scary Saw movie again, with this omnipresent thing that Jigsaw had in the first film. But so it’s a really kind of like dig into that. And definitely we want to give the fans what they love about the whole franchise as well, whilst I think it’s very important we want to do something new and fresh that hasn’t been done before. That’s the sale. That’s my pitch
James Wan Speaks on Saw XI
So we have a little update about Saw XI, as in a recent interview, James Wan had this to say.
For me to finally come back to it, I feel I have probably the freshest outlook. I feel I can come back to it with a new perspective whilst knowing that with this next movie I want to hark back to the spirit of the first movie. One of the things I really want to do with this next Saw is make it scary again. I want to make a scary Saw - not just gore but psychologically scarring, like what Leigh and I did in the first movie. Leigh and I both want to recapture the spirit of that first film and revisit Jigsaw’s philosophy, which is that he goes after people who don’t appreciate their lives. If you’re a scumbag, but you appreciate your life, he doesn’t see you as someone who’s wasting your life, so I want to go back to what we touched on in the first movie with regard to that. At the same time, I want to honor what people have come to love about the franchise, whilst trying to do something fresh and new that we haven’t seen before. This next movie would be the eleventh installment, and there’ve been lots of films in this world. We need to do something different in order to reach out to a new generation that didn’t grow up with it.
If you did not know, Blumhouse now has 50% of the rights to the Saw franchise, with the other 50% with Lionsgate, and original Saw creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell have been brought back and will guide the future of the franchise.
It's Confirmed, Saw XI Has Officially Been Pulled
So the rumors that I wrote about below seem to have now been confirmed, as Lionsgate has removed Saw 11 from its schedule and swapped in horror sequel The Strangers: Chapter 2 instead.
Reports are doing the rounds that the project is completely dead with no way back, but after the financial success of Saw 10, which earned $112 million worldwide, I am sure they will still be keen to release it at some point knowing they are leaving guaranteed money on the table if they don't.
But who knows.
Saw XI Apparently Cancelled?
So it seems Saw XI has been cancelled and won't be releasing after all.
The film which was set to release in September has been lacking any real updates, and as noted below, rumors had been flying around about Tobin Bell's general health.
But now it seems Saw XI has been cancelled, though it hasn't been officially confirmed as of writing.
Saw XI screenwriter Patrick Melton had this to say:
“We haven’t heard anything since May. It’s stalled at a managerial level. It has nothing to do with the creative or anything else. There’s higher-level things at play. ”
The reason it’s held up is just, there’s inter-squabbling between producers and Lionsgate. They just can’t quite get on the same page.
Be interesting to see if it will just be delayed again and this can be sorted, or will it be the end of the Saw franchise?
Saw XI Problems?
So we are in February and we have still not really had any official updates regarding Saw XI, and I will go on record to say this films is going to get postponed and might not even be released this year.
Rumors are also circulating online that all is not good with regards to Tobin Bell's advancing age being a big concern, who is 82 years old and apparently had issues with his health during the filming of the tenth installment of the franchise.
These are just rumors at this stage, but with no news about the film despite it due for release in 7 months time, I will assume all is not well with Saw XI.
Tobin Bell Confirms He Will Be Back For Saw XI
We pretty much knew Tobin Bell would be returning for Saw XI, but the actor has now confirmed it via an interview with the LA Times.
I’m really excited about continuing to develop him… John Kramer is not done. There’s more to learn
Saw X, the last film in the Saw franchise, was set between the events of Saw and Saw II and saw John Kramer (Tobin Bell) targets a group of people who tricked him after exploiting his cancer and it became the highest-rated film in the series earning $111.8 million from a $13 million budget.
Not much else is still known about Saw XI but I will update the page as and when news arrives.
Saw XI Now Releasing in 2025
In December 2024, it was announced that Saw XI would be releasing on September 27th 2024, but unfortunately it has now been announced that the release date has been put back a year for the survival horror franchise to September 26th, 2025.
Not much is still known about the movie though, but Tobin Bell, who plays John Kramer, has been in all the Saw movies except Spiral, so he'll likely be in Saw 11 too.
Costas Mandylor, who plays Mark Hoffman, the second Jigsaw, made a surprise appearance in Saw X's mid-credits scene, so it is rumored he will probably return as well, as well as Shawnee Smith, who reprised her role in Saw X.
In terms of the story, we can only guess right now, but it has been teased by the producers that it could be focused on Hoffman. Producer Mark Burg had this to say:
Oren [Koules] and myself are superstitious so we never talk about another movie until this movie opens. But should this movie open well, and should Lionsgate want to make another one, that’s exactly where we’re going with the next one.
Saw XI Teaser Trailer
Saw X was a huge hit for the franchise, making $107.7 million on a $13 million budget, so, it's no surprise that an 11th movie is happening. [Saw XI on IMDB]
Are you looking forward to Saw XI?
