Synopsis
The Space Between is an independent liminal horror film that transforms the familiar setting of a shopping mall into a haunting psychological nightmare of grief, isolation, and unseen forces.
The story follows Rick, an overnight security guard working alone inside a once-thriving Midwestern shopping mall after closing hours, and still struggling with the devastating loss of his daughter, Rick relies on the repetitive routine of his nightly patrols to maintain a sense of order and stability in his life, before another ordinary shift gradually unravels when strange occurrences start disrupting the familiar patterns of the building.

The film embraces the growing liminal horror subgenre (Backrooms), which focuses on familiar yet unsettling environments that evoke feelings of nostalgia, isolation, and existential unease, so rather than relying on traditional monsters or jump scares, the story draws tension from empty spaces, repetition, silence, and the psychological discomfort of places that feel abandoned but not entirely empty.
Director Joshua Garity has described the project as an exploration of the emotional impact of Midwestern spaces that once served as community gathering places but have slowly faded into partial abandonment. The film uses these environments to examine themes of loss, memory, and disconnection.
It was filmed inside a fully operational Midwestern shopping mall, with production taking place after business hours to capture the authentic atmosphere of a functioning retail environment emptied of people.
