Adorable Humans: Danish Horror Anthology Reimagines Hans Christian Andersen’s Darkest Tales

Adorable Humans 2026

Four stories - One twisted fairy-tale nightmare.

Synopsis

Set in modern-day Denmark, Adorable Humans follows four seemingly separate stories that gradually reveal connections between their characters, with each chapter exploring themes of fate, acceptance, love, loss and the darker sides of human nature.

One story follows a young woman who moves to the countryside hoping for a fresh start, only for a mysterious enchanted mirror to turn her new life into something deeply disturbing, and elsewhere, her psychiatrist begins experiencing terrifying visions connected to a horrific accident, while a young care worker looking after a dying man discovers disturbing secrets that perhaps should have remained buried.

The final story follows an ambitious musician struggling with writer’s block, only to discover that his creative muse may be something considerably more sinister than he imagined.

Together, the four stories form a loosely interconnected horror anthology that reimagines Andersen's familiar tales through a much darker and decidedly adult lens.

About Adorable Humans

Adorable Humans, originally titled Yndige Mennesker, is a Danish anthology feature inspired by four of Hans Christian Andersen's stories, where the filmmakers have taken Andersen's original themes as a starting point rather than attempting straightforward adaptations, relocating the stories to contemporary Denmark and turning them into unsettling tales of psychological trauma, supernatural forces and human obsession.

The anthology was made on a reported budget of around €70,000, with four Danish filmmakers joining forces to create the feature - the film has also enjoyed an extensive festival run, screening at genre festivals including Fantaspoa, Night Visions, Grimmfest and Macabro, while also picking up awards at events including Feratum, Dark Nights and the Nordic International Film Festival.

Its festival run coincides with the 150th anniversary of Andersen's death, making the project something of a deliberately twisted celebration of Denmark's most famous storyteller - the film has been described as a combination of Scandinavian horror and psychosexual drama, with the supernatural elements used sparingly enough to keep the audience questioning what is actually happening.
