A weekend away in the desert sounds like the sort of thing that could go either way - maybe you get some peace and quiet, maybe you realize halfway through that you forgot to bring enough water, or, if you're in a horror movie, you arrive at your rental and discover that the older couple waiting to greet you is far too happy to see you.
Godmother is going with option three - the new independent horror film comes from John Veron, who directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Alanah Pearce.
A Romantic Weekend Takes a Very Bad Turn
The movie centers on Theo, played by Paige Evans, who heads into the High Desert with her boyfriend Colby and her sister Katie for what is supposed to be a romantic getaway, where they arrive at their vacation rental and meet Mr. and Mrs. Martinson, played by Bruce Davison and Dee Wallace.
The Martinsons seem to also have their own reasons for being interested in Theo, and the weekend gradually turns into something much more sinister as the visitors discover that their hosts are not quite the harmless strangers they appeared to be.
John Veron and Alanah Pearce Make It Personal
John Veron directs and co-writes Godmother with Alanah Pearce, who is also producing the movie through her company Charred Pictures, and Veron is joined behind the scenes by cinematographer Dallas Sterling and production designer Sonia Foltarz, with Ditte-Marie Skjoldborg Lessèl handling editing.
Pearce also had a very specific reason for wanting to protect the movie's original identity- when traditional financing discussions began, the project faced pressure to change elements of the production, including casting, so rather than reshape the movie around those demands, Pearce and Seán McLoughlin, better known as Jacksepticeye, decided to finance it independently.
So Godmother becomes part of a growing group of independently made horror films coming out of the online creator world, following projects such as Markiplier's Iron Lung, but Pearce and McLoughlin have taken a different route by building their own production around an original horror story.
The Mini Teasers Keep Things Under Wraps
The newly released mini teasers don't give away much of the movie, which is probably a good thing considering how dependent the premise is on not knowing exactly what the Martinsons have planned., but the footage gives us quick glimpses of Theo, Colby, Katie and their hosts while establishing the increasingly uncomfortable atmosphere surrounding the vacation rental.
The teasers were released ahead of the film's first public screening, so audiences haven't yet had much opportunity to see how far Veron takes the story, but what we do know is that the filmmakers have promised a much darker situation than the initial setup suggests, with torture, violence and betrayals becoming part of the increasingly ugly weekend.
Godmother's Fantastic Fest Premiere
Godmother made its world premiere on September 18, 2026, at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, screening at Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar, where it is part of the festival's Horror Competition, and wider theatrical or streaming release date has not been clearly announced in the production information currently available.
