There are plenty of horror movies about the end of the world, where most of them seem to think the apocalypse has to be miserable in exactly the same way - everything is grey, everyone is covered in dirt, food is running out and somebody is usually wandering around an abandoned gas station looking suitably miserable - Hallowarrior at least has the decency to remember that some people would probably still be obsessed with Halloween even after civilization completely collapsed.
The new Shudder Original comes from writer-director Ben Sottak and stars Milly Shapiro as Pumpkin, a survivor living in a world where humanity has been wiped out by a plague, where she has turned her home into a full Halloween wonderland.
The problem is that she isn't alone for long, because a savage gang of raiders led by Thalia, played by Shannyn Sossamon, arrives and decides Pumpkin's little Halloween sanctuary looks like somewhere worth taking over, which leaves Pumpkin with the slightly inconvenient task of defending her home and everything she has built around herself.
A Halloween Movie Where Halloween Actually Matters
Pumpkin is described as the last girl on Earth, or at least the sole survivor of a plague that has essentially finished off humanity, and her obsession with Halloween isn't just there to make the poster look cool, because the entire world she has created around herself is built around the holiday, where Pumpkin has taken whatever remains of the old world and turned her home into this enormous Halloween fantasy, complete with decorations and all the weirdness you'd expect from somebody who apparently refuses to let the apocalypse ruin October.
The movie premiered at the Tribeca Festival on June 10, 2026, where it was described as a lean and visceral piece of genre filmmaking. Festival comparisons have also pointed toward the combination of Home Alone and survival horror, which actually makes more sense the more I think about it.
Milly Shapiro Leads the Fight
Milly Shapiro is probably best known to horror audiences for Hereditary, where she played Charlie Graham, while Shannyn Sossamon plays the other side of the equation as Thalia, the leader of the raiders who arrive at Pumpkin's doorstep.
The supporting cast includes Ajani Russell, AJ Bowen, Vic Plajas, Taylor Valentine Lupini, Logan Beveridge, Bobby McFarlane and others. AJ Bowen in particular should be familiar to anyone who spends far too much time watching horror, having appeared in films including The Sacrament, You're Next, The House of the Devil and a long list of other genre projects.
Ben Sottak writes and directs Hallowarrior, making this his feature directorial debut, although he isn't completely new to the genre, though, having worked as a commercial director and developed genre projects through his work with Strange Aeons, the production company he co-founded with Emmajane Hoffman - Sottak's background also includes work connected with genre festivals and projects appearing at places such as Fantasia, FrightFest, Telluride Horror Show and the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival.
Shudder Brings It to Horror Fans in October
Shudder acquired the film for North America, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, with the Shudder premiere set for October 16, 2026, which is obviously about as appropriate a release date as you could ask for. - the October 16 schedule also includes a "Surviving Halloween" watch party, pairing Hallowarrior with Night of the Demons.
