Your first kiss is supposed to be one of those big romantic moments you remember forever, and in The Last Kiss, it is apparently also a pretty good way to find out exactly how somebody is going to die - the new Blumhouse horror movie stars Mckenna Grace as Laurel, a teenager who has always imagined her first kiss would be something straight out of a fairy tale, but unfortunately, when she finally gets that kiss, she discovers she has been cursed with the ability to see the death of anyone she kisses.

Directed and co-written by Yoko Okumura, the film arrives on digital platforms on September 15, 2026, through Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, and it also stars Jaden Michael and Arkira Chantaratananond.

Her First Kiss Comes With a Pretty Horrible Side Effect

Laurel's new ability would already be bad enough if it was just a matter of seeing some vague supernatural vision, but here, the visions become a warning system for an actual murder spree, because after kissing her crush, Laurel sees that he is going to be killed, and what's worse, the killings appear to be targeting people in her close circle, leaving her with a very short amount of time to work out who the killer is and stop the massacre.

The Last Kiss is being described as a coming-of-age mystery thriller and Okumura has said the film takes the anxiety surrounding a first kiss and pushes it all the way into life-or-death territory, where the mythology surrounding the meaning of a kiss also influenced the film's fairy-tale aesthetic, score and visual style.

There's still a killer running around and there's still a mystery to solve, but the supernatural ability is tied directly to Laurel's feelings about intimacy, romance and growing up, where her biggest teenage milestone becomes the thing that puts everyone around her in danger.

Mckenna Grace Leads the Blumhouse Horror

Grace is joined by Jaden Michael, who plays Evan Geller, and Arkira Chantaratananond, who plays Poppy Yang, while the wider cast includes Ash Lee, Kate Drummond, Riley Davis, Eve Edwards, Cooper Levy, Samantha Espie and Stephanie Moore.

Behind the camera, Okumura directs and co-writes the film, following her feature Unseen, and the screenplay was written by Okumura alongside Krystal Houghton Ziv and Alon Ziv, from a story by The Zivs.

Jason Blum, James DeMonaco, Michael Fimognari and Sébastien K. Lemercier are among the producers/executive producers, with Blumhouse behind the movie, while Michael Fimognari also serves as cinematographer, and Tangelene Bolton composed the score. Bolton previously worked with Okumura on Unseen.
