A quiet mountain-lake community is about to become anything but peaceful in The Otherkind, an atmospheric indie horror thriller from writer-director Mary C. Russell, which follows a small lakeside town that begins descending into chaos after something sinister emerges from the water, bringing together a mysterious encounter, a troubled police officer and an increasingly disturbing threat that appears to be spreading through the community.
The Otherkind arrives on VOD on September 1, 2026.
Something Is Wrong Beneath the Surface
The story centers on a sleepy mountain lake town where life begins to unravel following a series of inexplicable disturbances, where one strand follows a woman who wakes up alone after spending a night at the lake with friends, convinced that something terrible has happened to her, while the other follows a troubled local police officer whose investigation gradually turns into a descent into paranoia.
As the two stories converge, the town is hit by a far more serious threat - a terrifying infection contaminates the local water supply, turning what initially appears to be a collection of unrelated incidents into something much bigger.
Mary C. Russell Directs a Two-Thread Nightmare
Russell serves as both writer and director, with Caroline O'Meara producing and Gary A. LaBranche and Karen LaBranche serving as executive producers, while en Meredith is the cinematographer, with Jonathan Fallik and Peter Szijarto handled editing.
The project has been in development for several years, with Russell previously describing it as an independent horror feature while the film was being made, and the film stars Rebekah Kennedy, Marc Anthony Samuel, Lestonja Diaz and Paris Dylan.
Kennedy will be familiar to horror audiences from films including Traumatika, giving The Otherkind another connection to the current wave of independent genre cinema.
It Has Already Had Its Festival Run
The Otherkind had its dual world premiere weekend in November 2025, first screening at the LA Horror Film Festival on November 7, before playing the Sin City Horror Fest in Las Vegas on November 8, where the film subsequently continued its festival run, including a screening at the Chicago Film Frenzy, where it won Best Horror/Thriller Film, and producer Gary LaBranche has described the project as a low-budget independent production involving around 40 cast and crew members.
The available production information lists the film as a science-fiction thriller, although its festival positioning and story clearly place it firmly within the horror world.
After completing its festival run, The Otherkind is set to reach VOD on September 1, 2026.
