Synopsis
Polong follows Fatima, an ambitious journalist who becomes obsessed with uncovering the truth behind Maria Hadi, a notorious female shaman whose past is filled with violence, ritual practice, and attempts at repentance in her final days.
Fatima’s investigation begins as a standard exposé into historical crimes, but quickly spirals into something far more dangerous when she unknowingly disturbs a force tied to Maria’s forbidden practices, and what begins as research into the past transforms into a present-day nightmare as an ancient entity - once controlled through ritual - is unleashed once again.

About Polong
Polong draws from regional folklore, black magic mythology, and loosely inspired real-world crime cases and urban legends across Southeast Asia, and while comparisons have been made to infamous historical cases, the director has clarified that Polong is a fictional narrative that combines multiple inspirations rather than focusing on any single real-life figure.
Rather than relying heavily on CGI, the film emphasizes practical effects, makeup design, and in-camera horror techniques, reportedly using less than 30% digital visual effects to maintain a grounded and visceral tone.
Director Zulkarnain Azhar described the film’s central theme as the destructive nature of inherited legacy, stating:
It’s about the urban legends people used to talk about — the myths and folklore that existed during that time. It’s inspired by several cases, not just one specific case.
The film gained early attention online following its teaser release, which accumulated millions of views within a short time, fueling anticipation ahead of its theatrical debut.
